The physics update that's quietly breaking — and remaking — old games
A change most players will never notice is forcing creators to rebuild mechanics they've relied on for years.
Every so often a platform update lands that's invisible to players and enormous to creators. This is one of those.
Tweaks to how objects collide and settle have subtly changed the feel of movement — enough to break carefully-tuned obbies, vehicles, and ragdolls built around the old behavior. For some creators it's a headache. For others, it's an opening.
‘‘The games that adapt fastest tend to come out ahead,'' one veteran builder told us. ‘‘Constraints are just level design for developers.''
